In this page you can see the function f (x)=x2. On the curve there are two movable points, and those are connected by a straight line. You can grab and move the points closer or further from each other. As we move the left point closer and closer to the right point the slope of the line get closer and closer to what could reasonable be called the slope at the left point.
Examine what slope we get for different values at x. What function of x would that describe?
